Time for a break :(

Morning All,

1 winner with each bank yesterday but I lost the plot and need a little break to get my head, and the banks, back together before I come back and start over.

Here's what happened - I had a bit of a lash at Soul Diva, more than I could really afford to risk at the moment (it's all relative) - she ran a pretty good race coming off a slow pace which was never going to suit and finishing second. She looked well in yesterday - which is why I had the bets I did - but when they raced the way they did she didn't have much hope of running down the leader.

Anyways - I reverted to type after she lost and chased what I had lost only to lose a bit more and mess up all my banks - STUPID.

Which is why I need the rest of the year off. I need to work out how to treat bets outside those I post here, not that there should be many but there will be some. When you have an interest in a horse, you have to have a bet on them when they go around, that's just the way it is.

I need to freshen up, have a few days off the punt - get my head together and come back stronger then ever!!!

Just on Soul Diva, it was good to see her find some form and with the extra $10800 in prize money she's now cracked the $250k - no owner would complain about that. My share is $324 and over $7.5k - still behind overall but not by much and as you can't put a price on the thrill of having an interest in a winner (although some probably do) - I'm very happy with her.

So that's it for now - I think I'll drop in and post a few thoughts on punting the next few days but I won't be posting any bets until the new year. This my friends, has been a lesson in what not to do - next year I'm determined to show you what to do to get it right :)

Day 39 - Diva Day :)

Morning All,

Boxing Day is always an interesting day, more so this year though. Two reasons - firstly the cricket is on at the MCG the same as normal only this time Australia is going into the match trailing the series vs South Africa 1 - 0 with 2 games to play. Australia has dominated for a long time which made things a little boring in some ways so at least now it's more exciting to watch again - GO THE AUSSIES

The second is Soul Diva is racing :)

I mentioned her a few weeks back when she last raced. I lease 5% of the mare and she's been a great - unfortunately this preparation they aimed a bit higher with her and she didn't really cope, so it's been very frustrating watching her go around and get beat. I'm hoping, and pretty confident, that today is the day she gets back into the winners stall.

It's a pretty even bunch but if she can find any of her old form she should win this one today. She's been freshened up and is back to the 1800m which should be ideal. Blinkers are going on for the first time and they seem to have given her a bit more focus. Most importantly, she's got a dry track again which she loves and is way down in class on what she's been facing. Should get around $5 so let's hope she gets this bank rolling again :)

Bet 4 Randwick Race 7 - 3 Ready to Lift

Won the traditional lead up to this race - The Christmas Cup - by 2 lengths beating most of those he faces today. That was on a wet track but has won on the dry before so that's not a problem. Looks very well in and is being backed. Dangers are Nuclear Sky, Zazabeau and Danzibaa.

101 bets down now and I'm behind again :( - I've been betting to bigger prices so maybe that needs to change, strike rate up and prices down could be the way to go but we'll see. Either way, need to get the bank moving the right direction again.

Morning All,

Just saw some footage of an NFL game in the states with snow tumbling on down - had a BBQ here yesterday where some were complaining it was a bit too warm. Which would you rather??? I guess the traditional Aussie sunny Christmas is great but I'd love to see a white one eventually. Overall though, give me the sun :)

Day 36 - the best made plans

Morning All,

Well there goes that idea - plan last night was to have a little nap and then get up to have a couple of bets on the Premier League, no go - slept like a baby right through all the kick offs - I sure am getting old LOL

The new gallops system got off to a bad start with two losers - Braided General was heavily backed but was beaten a fair way out. I was very surprised to see a couple of horses go down the outside rail alone, they didn't get close so it was obviously a bad decision. Warm Whispers, the one I thought was the main danger, got nutted by a $27 pop in a photo.

Albert the Fat was beaten by the barrier, ran a great 4th after not getting in or getting cover the whole way. Hindsight says it was a silly bet. Hindsight also says I should've backed Barlinnie each way instead - I did like it but I was worried that Albert would be too good despite the barrier. Barlinnie won paying $9 or so, a great each way price.

Interestingly of the favourites I mentioned only 1 of the 3, Keano, managed to win.

Overall Melbourne was a good day for the bookies, especially early on.

Not too worry though, with a little ironing out of the issues I can make this system pay. Next round of bets will be on Friday, Boxing Day.

Day 35 - the gallops are back

Back Again

Ok, I've found a couple I want to back today - I've decided to give a bit of an explanation for my bets so you can see my thought patterns.

The first one is Melbourne Race 3 - 1 Braided General.

It's an interesting race and I'm possibly doing the wrong thing betting on a race down the straight at Flemington, small field helps though as I'd expect all the horses to come down either the flat or grandstand side together. I've got the race down to just 2 chances - my pick Braided General and the David Hayes horse Warm Whispers.

I've gone the way I have because of race experience. Braided General has had the 4 starts for 2 wins and a 2nd. The provincial wins were both by good margins and the 2nd was last start in a race that doesn't look any harder than this one. Importantly, all it's runs have been on Dead rated tracks which is what we have today. Warm Whispers has just the one start for a good win at Moonee Valley. The 3kg claim on my one means I get a 1/2 kg advantage. Melbourne's two leading trainers head to head but at the $4.44 I've locked in I think I've gone the right way.

The second bet is Brisbane race 7 - 14 Albert the Fat

Lots of tips for this one today so it'll start a bit shorter than it should, I'm happy to have locked in $3.60 though. Albert's had 10 starts for 7 wins as is a pretty smart horse. He has won at the track, the distance and the conditions so none of those are a worry. The wide barrier is a concern but he should either be able to slot in or get cover and with the 53 kgs I'm happy to be on him.

There are a few dangers and if I was taking mulitples I'd include Barlinnie, Charming Rouge and Nextgen - most of the dangers being down in the weights.

So there they are, hopefully I've gone the right way - I was tempted to take the 3 shorties at Flemington - Instructor, Ravishing Reward and Keano but they all look like being odds on so I've stayed out and looked for a bit better value.

Well that's my last working Friday out of the way for the year, I finish up at noon on Wednesday and start back on Jan 5 - I can hardly wait :)

Messed up a bit yesterday, hence the title of today's post, the Dallas vs Baltimore game isn't actually on until tomorrow my time - now that's unprofessional, not even knowing when a game starts!!!!

I blame Betfair, nah actually it's my fault - I've now worked out that just because a game is in bold in their markets doesn't mean it's on soon. Anyways, this means I have to make a decision if I bet on or wait, obviously the answer is to bet on especially with so much going on today.

So I'll hold the results over, although will let you know that Indianapolis did the right thing and covered the spread :)

If I can't find a decent bet at ok odds of $1.50 ish + it could be working picking up 2 or 3 shorties to get there. Not an issue today though, I think I found a couple of decent bets.

Overall though, not good. Blew 2 banks and the new bank 1 is currently $38.45 down.

To make a go of the sports bank I need to find some consistency - I think 60% is the mark but that will obviously depend on prices. Either way, the bank is in front so that's a positive but there's plenty of work to do.

Bank 1 needs an approach that will work. So I'm going with something simple - 2 bets per Saturday / Public Holiday at 10% each. So bigger but less bets on the best race day each week.

Saturday is attractive because I have time to do the form + the form is stronger and more reliable. Overall, if I get it right the bank should start moving in the right direction.

So that's the plan, not much betting action but the potential to turn things around if I'm patient and make the right selections.

The result was expected - dropped the $50, well $49.58 - it took 15 bets to do it. It was funny though, it wasn't like it has been in the past, I couldn't really get interested betting that way - it did nothing for me. Am I cured, probably not but hey - it's something to build off.

Day 28 - something I probably shouldn't do

Hey All,

Finally picked up another win with the sports bank so it's moving in the right direction again :)

I mentioned Soul Diva a few weeks back, she was meant to race today but has been scratched due to the wet track down at Headquarters, she now aims towards Boxing Day - hopefully we'll get a dry track then.

Anyways, this leaves me in an interesting position - I've put $50 in my TAB account to have on her but now don't need it for that - note - I record the small number of extra bets I have on her etc on another spreadsheet so that I have a record of them. The temptation is strong to have a bit of a play, something I probably shouldn't do but will. There's only the $50 there so it's the most I can lose and it would be nice to have a bit of extra spending money for Christmas if I can build it up a bit.

So that's the plan for today, I will do this with more control then previously though - I WILL NOT BET IN EVERY RACE. I'll post my days betting tonight and you can see what's happened. Bank 1 will be on hold this week.

Day 26 - yet another rethink

Morning All,

Shocker of a day yesterday - of the 4 lays that got matched 3 lost / won - whichever it is, caused me to go backwards anyway. The rethink - stick to Saturdays for a bit - it's the day I have time to do form and when the best horses race.

Sports - I was walking from the bus to work on Tuesday feeling good about everything, the bank had touched the $150's - I was planning my life as a full time professional sports better and then 6 straight losing bets :( - punting hey, ups and downs and if you get over confident it'll whack you and put you in your place.

Mind you it can be beaten, and will - just need to work out how.

I'm having another multiple today but going the whole hog - 6 NBA games, taking all 57 combinations this time, unfortunately only for a massive 20 cents each. That's actually combining both bets in one. Total possible win is $9.97 on an $11.40 investment however if I don't hit all 6 winners (need at least 2) I'll still get something back. Let's see how it goes, might be something to work with.

Morning All,

A bit of a rush here as I'm late again, was just hanging on to see if Tottenham would do the right thing and indeed they did - 2 nil. Asian handicap, a success :)

Will have a whack at a couple of Betfair multiples today, well kind of. After the weekends mistake in placing an accumulator with the wrong team, I've decided to go to multiples instead and couple up the games I want rather than the ones they choose. Why I say kind of is that rather than take a double and a treble on the same bet I'll do it as two separate bets - 1 double and 1 treble. Lets see how it goes.

Day 23 - Asian handicap

Evening All,

Having a go at something new tonight, I've been trying to get my head around how asian handicap betting works in the soccer and I think the only way to really figure it out is to have a bet, well two.

So here it is.

Bet 65 Soocer Tottenham +0& +.5 vs Westham @ $1.69
Bet 66 Soccer Tottenham -0& -.5 vs Westham @ $2.36

Basically it's all about taking the draw out of play, well mostly - with these two bets if it's a draw I lose $1.11 (bet is 2 * $7.18), if Westham wins I'm screwed - I lose $14.36. If, as I hope happens, Tottenham wins I'll pick up $14.72 so better than evens with only the small loss if it's a draw.

I guess this has to be compared to the $2.74 straight out on Tottenham - I'll leave it to someone else to do the maths if they like - seems like an ok pair of bets to me.

On a side note I won the Australian Online Poker League freeroll tonight, I think there was around 64 starters so not a bad turnout. Sure the prize is only 4 euros but when you play in the league it's more about the glory :)

Day 23 - another bank dies

Morning All,

Just a quick wrap up of yesterday, no bets for now.

Firstly - the quaddie bank is dead, I was alive coming into the last leg in both but couldn't manage a result on either bet. I might bring it back in the new year but will see what happens. This one was always going to be higher risk so even getting to 52 bets wasn't too bad.

Secondly - a losing day for the new bank 1 - only got matched on 3 bets and 2 of them lost :( - on a bright note, I would've had a 3rd loser if I had got matched on all 5 - phew. There's a little bit of work to be done to iron out the wrinkles in this one. Just so you know, I decided to stick to a 5% of the bank $5 minimum approach.

I won't be betting Mondays + maybe Tuesdays on this one, there aren't enough races to choose from.

Thirdly - I almost got lucky on the sports bank with the Hawks getting to within 2 points in the end. The Jazz just held on so I pulled a small profit overall. I tried to get some sports bets on either today's NFL or NBA but I'm running a bit late and missed out.

Copped a small loss last night but thinking about it I went the right way, kind of anyway. I was going to back Newcastle either way so adding the other 2 winners improved the price. Unfortunately Newcastle could only manage a draw so I would've lost anyway. I guess the better bet may have been the Arsenal / Chelsea double but hey - hindsight in punting, as everywhere else, is 20 / 20 vision.

I do need to clarify something about it though - when I said I was risking my whole bank today it wasn't really the case. I was "potentially" risking my whole bank if everything I took on as a lay bet was paying $5, none of them actually were. As a result, the risk wasn't as big as I first indicated. The only won that was a lay and won was I've Got Talent and it was matched at evens so my loss on that race was only $5. Not quite the $20 it would potentially have been. I hope this makes sense.

Day 21 - the next part

Hey All,

Back again.

Had to do some testing to on the new system and work out how to place my bets - it's going to be riskier than planned but I'll take the chance and see what happens.

Basically what I'll be doing is laying 5 horses per day on Betfair - I'm using Betting Assistant to place my bets so I can set it and forget it. I'm betting at the minimum stake of $5 - I probably could have found a way to drop that down further but I'll take the chance. I'll be effectively risking the whole $100 bank today so it'll be a little nerve racking but if I can get off to a start it'll get better as the bank builds. Maximum price I'll lay to is $5 - so my risk on each bet is $20. If the horse gets outside that price range the bet shouldn't get matched.

I'll need to have a good strike rate to make this pay so fingers crossed.

2 winning banks one losing - well done Wallabies, breaking several droughts on this tour. Kangaroos did much worse than I expected, I was confident with the 16.5 start on the Kiwi's but I didn't think they'd actually win. They were VERY good. Day 9 - 1 A new approach

Morning All,

It was good having the day off, gave me a chance to think things through. I've decided to make a couple of changes - one small, one a bit bigger - let's hope it helps.

With Bank 1 I'm going to change from 5 * 2% to 2 * 5% (with a $5 minimum) - so fewer but bigger bets. Main driver for this is actually work related - I'm changing jobs on Monday and I won't be able to stuff about for an hour each morning on here. It also lets me take the fixed odds on Betfair where possible e.g. today. Finally,I'd rather the bigger bets and additional pressure that's goes with that, hopefully it'll lead to better results.

With bank 3 I'm going to tighten it up a bit. Picking teams against big starts is stupid especially when I can get ok odds with straight win bets with no margins. The prices will be shorter but the strike rate should lift. That's the plan anyway.

So going into my day off I'm down on all but the sports bank and it's well down on it's peak. Some thinking to be done over the next 24 hours or so to see what I'll do. One point I'd like to make is that normally the $300 I deposited to start this off last week would be gone by now. I might have grown it to $700 - $800 but most likely would've got carried away and lost it all by now. It's dumb, but that's how I was betting. At least now I still have $245 or so left, that's a negative figure but for me - a positive and something to work on.

Sports bank wipes out again - 6 losers in a row and enough for me to have a night off. I got way too cocky on this one, will get it back together though - I'm confident.

Rockhampton was abandoned so 2 bets on bank 1 are money back as well as the quaddie. I'll have 7 bets on Saturday to get back up to brackets of 5 for bank 1 and will take a quaddie on Canterbury tonight along with the greyhounds to get bank 3 back on evens.

Bet numbers probably won't make sense to you but I know what they mean so it's all good.

I was tempted to take the shorts but went with the value around the starts, I'll find out if that's a mistake or not in a few hours.

I promised to give a little more detail on how I make my picks - so here it is, but just a little - I'll throw more out there down the track if I'm still doing ok

Races - I look at the racing and sports website for the pre-post favourites. If there is a short one I'll look at the race further. The decision then becomes, back the favourite or find something to beat it. Once my bank starts getting a bit bigger I'll probably look at laying some of the favourites if I think they will get rolled. It's pretty annoying when you find a favourite that'll get beat, especially a really short one, but pick the wrong one to beat it.

Trots and Greys - I use Sky Ratings, they are free, a little patchy - but if you pick and choose they can find a winner or two. The worry is that when you do find one they can be pretty short, e.g. last night.

Sports - I'll check what's on, surf the net for a bit to find some more information and then go on gut feel. I'm really looking forward to the league and AFL next year, there's money to be made if I manage my bank properly.

You'll notice I said I lost on the Betfair Park quaddie even though I got it - the reason being I only got back $1.67 from a $5 bet. Sure it's a return, but it's a loss so needs to be shown that way. It's not like the poker machines that say you win when you bet 100 credits and get back 20 credits - you lost 80 credits, tell it how it is!!!

You might also notice that I got 3 of the 4 legs at Rosehill - that'll happen pretty often - although hopefully not too often, close but no cigar.

My 3rd bank also starts up today - it's my quaddie bank. For those that don't know, a quaddie is where you pick the winner of the 4 races that make it up. In the gallops that's normally the last 4 races on the card. I'm betting on my NSW Tab account so that I can take flexi bets - i.e. bet to a percentage of the cost rather than a 1/2 or full unit. You'll notice some small percentages today - hopefully they won't be that small every time but I thought both Rosehill and Betfair (Sandown) Park are wide open.

Betting on my quaddie bank will be 2 * 5% - they are hard to get but hopefully I'll jag a few and keep the bank going for a while.

You'll notice the weird race course name - Betfair signed a naming rights deal with the Melbourne Racing Club (MRC) through the week. Bank 2 also starts off tonight, it's my sports betting bank. A little different approach here with bets of 2 * 5%. I'll spray these around on all sorts of sports but usually something a bit more major than European ice hockey or the like.

A lot of my sports picks will be odds on but I'm hoping for a very good strike rate.

Personally I don't mind betting on odds on chances as long as they are value - now that's something I struggle with. But we'll develop that discussion in the coming weeks.

Hopefully the formatting of this reads ok, I'm keeping my results in an excel spreadsheet but it didn't paste across correctly and I can't be bothered fixing that up at the moment. Maybe a little down the track.

Anyways, things to do - fingers crossed for better results tonight.

It's all a little exciting, and a little weird - here I am opening my punting up for the world to see. It could get ugly but hopefully it'll all work out, either way - enjoy the ride.

I'll just start one bank off this morning, my standard betting bank - gallops / trots and dogs. After much thought, I've decided to go with a 5 * 2% approach - i.e. 10% per session. I will recalculate the stake at the beginning of each session, I'd love to do it after each bet but hey - I'll be at work so no can do. This approach could change depending on results but I'm hoping it works out and I can stick with it as my long term approach.

Almost there

Hey All,

Thought I'd drop in and throw an idea around as the big day is getting closer.

After punting for over half my life, I've picked up a few things - haven't actually made them pay yet - but that's about to change.

Here's one of my favourites :)

The market - i.e. the betting market - everywhere I've looked, today and in the past, in Australia and overseas - around 1 in 3 favourites win. That's pretty impressive when you think about it, year in year out - as soon as the number of races considered gets big enough - favourite punters get it right around 1 out of every 3 bets. Not a bad effort really - a 33% strike rate or there abouts.

The problem of course is favourites don't pay an average of more than $3.33 when they do win, if they did - we'd all be rich :) We could just sit back and back every favourite and win year in year out. Unfortunately, it's not quite that simple.

A guy named Don Beggs wrote a book called "Walk away a winner" in the 90's. It's a pretty good read, complex - full of numbers but worthwhile even if I doubt very much I, or he, could make it pay - so I never tried. There are some very interesting figures in there though, some I have looked at many times over the years. Don spent hours in the TAB and kept stats on every race for a couple of years 94/95 and 96/97. On his figures, if you had $1 to win on every favourite in 94/95 you would have only lost $39, in 96/97 you would have lost $47. In both years the sample was around 3800 races. There was actually a small profit at SP prices in both years but not big or reliable enough to make pay.

He did similar figures on second favourites with the results being a loss of $355 in 94/95 and $394 in 97/98. So the figures fall away a bit with second favourites - bigger prices on average but a worse strike rate of around 17% means you end up further behind. Still not terrible though, I would've been a lot better off if I only lost $394 in the last 12 months :(

If you put these two together though - the first and second favourite - you're looking at the winner of around 50% of races - yep, that's right - punters are on the money with the first and second horse in the market in around half of all races. That's a pretty good effort for mine. Not bad at all.

The question then becomes, why look much wider??? Sure everyone loves backing winners at $10's, $20's even $50's - they are about, and every now and then one stands out - if it does, have a crack. Bread and butter though, as a punter, should you really worry about looking at every horse in every race when you could get half the winners by just considering the first and second favourite??? I'm not saying don't look at the other runners at all, but focus on the the top two in the market - pick the standouts and surely there is money to be made.

That's what I'll be focusing on when I start up on Thursday - the top 2 in the market, normally the favourite - sure they'll be short but my strike rate will hopefully be high and if I get it right, the profits should flow.
