Missed it by that much :(

Hey All,

Missed the next break by a minute or two - pocket pair was always going to be a killer so when I went all in with my 4's and saw he had 9's I knew straight away i was gone

Pretty happy though - 1740 starters and I finshed 68th picking up a $11 ticket in SCOOP :)

Couple of tips for today - Randwick Race 5 - 2 Zavite and Caulfield Race 5 - 1 Denman (will be short but should win)

Late for my bbq now though so gotta run

All the best

Update Number 3 :)

WAHOO - I'm still kicking although it was a close call there for a bit. Overplayed a couple of hands and fell back into the 100's and in danger of missing the "money". Pocket 10's came to the rescue though, turning into trips and allowing me to double up to 20,669 chips at the 3rd break.

Currently 71st of 161 - with 153 in the "money" - should make it from here :)

Average stack is 21,886 so I'm just under.

Probably won't make the next break but we'll see how I go :)

Cheers

Update number 2

Hey All,

Break number 2 and I'm still kicking :)

Pocket pairs are holding up well and I've taken out a couple more players now - 4's turned into a full house on the flop and 7's held up against A 9 or similar. It's nice having a big stack to rick against small ones on ify hands.

Current position 25 of 343 - avg stack 10145 my stack 21333 :)

Just need to have some patience and play smart and should get into the "money"

Will let you know how I go

Quick update

Hey All,

I'm still alive at the first break, looks like 9 is my lucky number today :)

Couple of bad calls early had me in trouble - but then I managed a few small wins before hitting 4 * 9's against A Q and getting all a guys chips. This was followed up by my 99 holding up against A 10 to take out another. Overplayed a hand to give half my stack back :(

All good though, after the break - pocket 2's hit trips on the flop and take out another who had A 2 and had hit two pair. Then pocket 7's stood up to take out another small stack. Cards are falling my way and I've just cracked 10000 chips and I'm in 40th place, out of 1017 avg stack 3532 - time to tighten up a bit with prizes to 153rd

Wish me luck :)

See if this works

This is what I'm playing in today - I couldn't figure out how to fit it in the sidebar

Happy Australia Day :)

Hey All,

Busy day coming up today, poker, punting and a BBQ

I didn't run the bot last night, instead I'll hold off and let it run on the races today - it's not a bad days racing + that's what my testing was on. Hopefully it'll do ok. Plus it works out well as I'll be at a BBQ with friends all afternoon so I can set it and hopefully come home to find it in profit :)

This morning is Poker, starts in 15 minutes or so - I'm playing to win a ticket into the SCOOP competition at Pokerstars. I'm not actually sure when that's on but I guess it's sometime in Autumn southern hemisphere time. Anyways, I get a chance to have a crack for free due to having this blog so I'm happy.

Will let you know how I'm going - wish me luck

Cheers

Another one bites the dust - well mostly

Hey All,

Don't you just hate it when you come up with a new system, do a little testing on paper (well in a spreadsheet) and the results look great - the excitement builds as you prepare to give it a go and then...

It flops :(

System was a very simple one - laying the 3rd favourite on Betfair. I've seen plenty of figures that tell me that of the top 5 favourites the 3rd one makes the biggest loss so I figured there is money to be made laying them - especially if you add a little loss recovery to the mix. Of course doing this is time consuming and a bit boring but seeing as bots don't get bored I figured that was the way to go. I downloaded a bot on a 5 day free trial and set it to work.

As a test I ran it on the UK greyhounds and after day, well night, one it had made a profit and everything was looking good - well until I realised I'd stuffed up the settings and rather than try and recover 100% of the loss over 5 bets, which I thought meant 20% of the loss at a time, it reocovered 100% of the loss 5 times!!! So I woke up to find the bot had made over $100 profit when I was hoping for a steady $30.

Either way, once more I thought I was on a winner - just had to rejig the bot and all would be fine. I took the afternoon off work, there wasn't much going on anyway as the systems were down, and ran the bot again but this time on the Aussie racing - worked a treat, the bank cracked $400 and I was away. This was all too easy, I was dreaming of retiring and all was good.

And then it happened, I ran the bot on the UK greyhounds again and woke up to find my max loss reached and half the bank gone :( - I was definitely too greedy there but my confidence was up. Anyways a run of losers had done major damage to my bank. I still had money left and figured it could turn around, my paper testing had been on Saturday gallops and that's what we were up to - the money would be rolling in again real soon - but no, a run of losers again and the bank was suddenly halved once more. Reset, start again with half the bank and once again - GONE. So so frustrating. You would hit a double figure run of results and then wipe it out with 3 out of 5 stuff ups.

So, the system has bitten the dust - well like I said mostly, I have the bot for another 24 hours or so, I'm hoping to crank it up one last time for small stakes and see if it can pay for itself. If not, then the system will be dead and buried.

Punting can be so painful at times

Poker on the otherhand, well actually - it can be ultra frustrating as well but still worth a crack. So this time tomorrow I'll be playing in the World Blogger Championships on Pokerstars. There are a week of lead ups to a main event on the 31st (1st of Feb our time) - unfortunately they are all on this time of day so I'll miss Wednesday, Thursday and Friday while I'm at work but hopefully I can make the most of the others and crack a prize or two. Got to love Australia Day and the taking an extra day off to make it a 4 day weekend :)

If you got a blog - why not have a crack.

Ok, better get going - got some things to do

Have a great day

I'm still kicking

Hey All,

Just a quick post to let yow know I'm still out here. I have a new system to trial from tomorrow but won't say too much for now, fingers crossed it works.

Thanks to Davo for telling me about the Poker Stars blogger championships - maybe I can win on the tables instead of at the races :)

Anyways, I'll see how I go and let you know

How not to punt - 2009 done and dusted

Hey All,

Firstly - Happy New Year :)

Secondly, I am a very ordinary punter at times and I proved that to myself the last couple of months and in particular the last few days. Two things kill me when I bet, I know it but still make the same mistakes. They are

1 - over confidence - I get on a roll like I did around August where I can't seem to do wrong, so I push it and then it falls in a heap. So much so that the last couple of months have been shocking. I bet too big stakes, I make bets I shouldn't make and I play way too many races (see below). Annoying thing is that as a punter if you have no confidence you will most likely either lose or not bet. So there's a balance somewhere in there that I'm struggling to find.

2 - too many bets - I've just spent the last couple of days cleaning out all my betting accounts betting race to race in the hope of getting back into the winning zone. Of course it didn't work, it never does - there are punters out there that successfully play every race, so it can be done BUT they spend hours rating them etc, without the work it's almost impossible to do - so I need to pick and choose, target my bets - that's the advantage we have over the bookies, they have to field on every race - we don't - I need to realise that.

So, I know what's wrong - question is can I fix it?

I think I can and will have a crack at doing so from next week when I can load a little more money in and start over. In some ways it'll be good to have a week off, clear my head and get a bit more organised. Sure it's frustrating but hey, you need to live with the consequences of your actions and my actions mean that I need to have a week off.

It's a little sad thinking where I was when I started this blog - I had a plan, a system and had done a hell of a lot of work. From there I drifted back into old habits and ended up in the same place I've always ended up. If anyone reads this they probably think I should give it all up and they would probably be right, I would be a hell of a lot better off financially if I'd never had a bet at all BUT it's in my blood, I know the game can be beat and I've seen people do it - I still want to be one of those people. I just have to work out how.

There's another challenge I have - this is going to sound stupid to some, possibly familar to others, but I'm so used to losing on the punt that mentally it's easier if I do. It's what I know, it's familar, it's what I've been doing for years and then somehow that becomes - I don't deserve to win, I need to punish myself for my choices by losing. My psychology 101 tells me it's a learned behaviour, and it is, I just need to "unlearn" it.

So that's what I need to change in 2010 - I need to snap out of the "losing is what I do" mentality and realise that it's ok to win. It's not going to be easy but 2010 is a big year for me, I turn 40 this year - I've been punting over half my life now and it's time to turn it all around, it's time to make it happen. It's time to break the losing habit.

By the way, the tipping thing didn't work out, I missed a few cut off dates and lost interest - might have another go one day, I'll leave the link below, there are some great tipsters on the site, check it out.

Overall from here re this blog, I probably won't be posting my bets like originally did - that's too structured, too organised and in some ways adds too much pressure. I'll post some thoughts now and then though, maybe a tip here and there and go with the flow.

So thanks for reading, keep checking in and I'll let you know how things are progressing - any advice would be welcome.

Cheers and have a wonderful 2010 :)
