Hey All,
Sorry I didn't post yesterday - I only got back from holidays early in the morning and didn't get out of bed until lunch time.
After much consideration, I will be holding off trialing the new approach until the new year - there's just too much going on with Christmas coming up - bbq's, parties etc and I won't have the time, or money, to dedicate to it until Christmas is done and dusted.
Punting has been pretty quiet the last couple of weeks - did manage to pull a few hundred out of a Big 6 a couple of weeks back to help pay for my little trip away but apart from that same old same old for when I was betting, not that I got much done while I was away. I did go to the Gosford Cup - lost on the day but if I just bet on the track, as per the new system, I would've walked out in front, something to keep in mind. The crowd was VERY disappointing.
Was hoping to play a lot of poker this week in the APCOOP - I think that's the initials, on Pokerstars but they account is a bit empty so unless I get off to a flyer and cash in tonight's tournament it'll be quiet until later in the week when I'll play a couple more games. For those that don't know, the letters stand for Australian and Pacific Championship Of Online Poker, or something like that, and it's week long event with games each night for basically our region. Fingers crossed for a result or 3
Apart from that, back to work tomorrow :(
Hope everyone is well, will try and post a bit between now and the end of the year about how things are coming along but the main focus will begin from Jan 1 2011 :)
Cheers
A mug punter's attempt to turn things around - watch and learn (or maybe just point and laugh) as I have a crack at moving from being - the not so professional punter - through - the semi professional punter and finally to - the professional punter - Well hopefully :)

Well that was weird
Hey All,
Figured it was about time I touched base again, I can't believe it's been so long since I last posted.
The election result wasn't ideal on first appearance with Australia ending up with a hung parliament BUT in hindsight, I'm pretty happy. The big things for me being the Greens getting more power along with the country independents - we've been getting sucked to the right for too long so the Greens should help with that and the rural / regional areas will finally get a look in thanks to the independents - interesting times ahead.
Anyways, enough of that - and back to the punt. It's been..... well weird really. I lost all my structure and threw away all my rules and ended up having one of the most mixed up few months ever. I've had nice wins at the races and the casino and big losses on Betfair where I just can't get on a roll. In the end I've had an enjoyable time but learned that money management is just as important when you're winning as when your losing - I'm back to square in terms of my accounts being empty again but did buy a few things I needed, pay a few bills and have a few BIG nights along the way so it wasn't a total wipe out.
Highlights were Etoile Vitesse winning a race at Moruya and paying around $8 - I bet up a bit on the race as I was pretty confident and cleaned up, well relatively pulling in around $1k in total. She has had a great preparation with 3 wins, a 2nd and a 3rd from her 7 starts and although she ran 6th last start it was a big step up in class being her first start in town. Looks like at lest one more run so fingers crossed for a result.
The other big racing result was on Cox Plate Day where I took a 5 legged parlay for an outlay of $26, hit all 5 legs and got back just over $1000 - definitely something worth looking at again in the future especially as none of the legs paid over $10, 2 were long odds on and 1 was around evens. Also bet up a bit after the collect and hit a nice trifecta in the last race for a small percentage to have one of my best ever days on course.
Outside of that, I had some fun on the craps tables at the casino thanks to some advice from a regular player and a new system I now use - I'll look forward to giving it another run when I'm cashed up again.
Now to the future, I've still been betting on too many races so that has to stop and I think I've found the way to do it. There is a guy on the Betfair forum called Sea The Stars that works on a system of betting flat stakes on each race in Melbourne on Saturdays and Wednesdays - he seems to do pretty well out of it and the reason it appeals is that I've often thought that if I'd just bet on a certain meeting I would've walked out in front. Time to find out if that's true or not.
So it's time to start a another trial - well almost time, I'm currently on holidays and will be going away later in the week so will hold off until I get back on the 20th or - so potentially starting up on Saturday the 21st.
I will do it a little differently though - initial thinking is
* Saturdays only
* Sydney and Melbourne only
* Flat stakes - $10 per race
* Each way betting at better than $2 the place (this one could change but is basically about maintaining cash flow for now)
* A/F/F trifectas on odds on favs along with A/2nd, 3rd, 4th favs - shopping for better returns than just taking the short odds
* A four legged parlay at each venue each day for $1 - cost $11 per meeting
* Quaddies and Big 6's at each venue as well
* Lays - 1 selection per race risking up to $50 - maximum loss for the day of $100
Plan is to risk a total of $300 (including the $100 on the lays) each week - working on 8 races per meeting, I'll add an extra $10 per race for any additional races.
So we'll see how that goes for the rest of the year and work out if it has potential or not. The biggest advantage is that it caps the number of races I play each week but maintains enough races to keep me interested all day on a Saturday.
I will possibly play Monday and Thursday night greyhounds as well but will decide that when I get back - the rest of the week will be either poker or punt free unless I go to the races on a Friday night etc
I hope all this makes sense - the other advantage of this system is that I'll be able to start posting my tips on Saturdays again, well at least my early thoughts - I might even use Twitter to update them during the day as well so people can follow me as I go, if they are interested of course
I've tried a hell of a lot of different approaches, here's another - let's hope it's the one.
Better get out and about and enjoy this beautiful weather
All the best
p.s. Soul Diva is in foal to Denman - as I leased to race her that's the end of another Chapter with plenty of great memories, she will be missed

Back again but broken a few rules
Hey All,
Back punting again this week, hoping to get on a bit of a roll. The big news is that I've got a new mobile, a Nokia N97 Mini, and loaded Betfair onto it so I will be able to bet to the system on course at Moonee Valley tomorrow.
I started betting on the greyhounds and trots again last night and managed to finish $27 in front. I did break my rules though by having a couple of trifectas - I will have avoid that from here on in, well at least until the bank is big enough to allow for it.
The other rule I've broken is the 10% limit on the quaddie but I'll get back to that once the bank grows a bit as well
Update on the banks
Part 1 - Betfair + $7
Part 2 - Exotics + $44
Part 6 - Lotteries - $4
Today's bets
Harold Park
Race 3 - 2,5
Race 4 - 2,3,4
Race 5 - 4,6
Race 6 - 1,6,8
Race 7 - 1,2,7,9,11
Race 8 - 5,7,10
Melton
Race 3 - 1,4,7,10
Race 4 - 2,4,7,9
Race 5 - 1,10
Race 6 - 1,3,6,10
Race 7 - 3,4
Race 8 - 10,11
Quaddies are races 4 to 7, Big 6's all 6 races
The other bet I've had is heart more than head - Labor -10.5 seats in the this weekends election for my $27 profit at odds of around $4.20 which is unders. I am pretty confident Labor will win, I'm hoping they win by at least that margin.
My horses - Etolie Vitesse went back to back on Monday - GO YOU GOOD THING - she has improved lengths this preparation so I'm hoping she can keep stepping up through the classes
Better get to work
Have a great day All

J.J. Liston Stakes Day
Hey All,
Off to the races shortly for what will be an excellent days racing with some of the best horses in Australia stepping out to start their spring campaigns, all very exciting. I'm heading along with a few mates and not a lot of cash but hopefully I'll back a winner or 3 and make it all worthwhile - well actually just watching these ones go around makes it worthwhile.
Not much action this week as I wait to start up again next week but I did have a quaddie at Harold Park last night, wiped out and my first go at the lotteries during the week in the $30 million Oz Lotto draw - just the one winner cleaned up the $30 million, unfortunately it wasn't me.
Updated results
Part 1 - Befair -$20
Part 2 - Exotics + $44
Part 6 - Lotteries -$4 (I'll round these up and down to whole dollar amounts)
My 8 winners today at Caulfield are
Race 1 - 1 Abitofado
Race 2 - 13 Lucy's Cash
Race 3 - 6 Mister Harry
Race 4 - 1 Crystal Lily
Race 5 - 1 Mr Baritone
Race 6 - 11 Shoot Out
Race 7 - 18 Rhythm in Paris
Race 8 - 15 Imperial Command
Have a great day All

A false start
Hey All,
Was an interesting weekend - Soul Diva ran 4th on an unsuitable track, I dropped my Betfair profit plus the $10ew I had on her and made some money on the exotics. Overall though, I've had to declare it a false start as I needed to cash out to cover the extra expenses of moving - will start up again properly the weekend after this one although I will look at running some exotics this weekend.
I'll continue to count though, you can't map the season if you leave days out
Part 1 - Betfair -$20
Part 2 - The Exotics $50 - thanks to hitting 33.33% of the Wenthworth Park quaddie on Saturday night.
I did miss putting on the Flemington Big 6 as well, not that it mattered, as I would've lost anyway. Long story involving the dry cleaner.....
So overall I'm $30 up for the season with a long way to go
Will possibly be back with some exotics later in the week, otherwise definitely next week.
Cheers

Saturday before I get older
Hey All,
Bit if a stuff up yesterday in that I didn't get a chance to put my Melton bets on and cost myself a little dividend in the process :(
Melton Quaddie paid $94.20 of which I would've got half for my $6 investment.
Everything else wiped out though so net end result is
Part 2 -$12
Off to the races today to watch Soul Diva go around, shame the track is as wet as it is, doesn't really suit her. No bets on Betfair apart from $10 each way I've had on her - which won't count as it's a bet on my own horse. I'll have to work out how to manage that as I go.

A little win to begin
Evening All,
Just dropped in for a quick update - just one part running so far, part 1 on Betfair and it's started with a win of $40.17. Had a total of 50 bets on the greyhounds and trots, it sounds like a lot but I did actually skip a few races I couldn't work out. I am keeping records and notes so will be able to cull a bit as I see where I'm winning and losing.
So Part 1 + $40.17
Won't be much action on that for a few days as I'm going out tomorrow, to the races on Saturday (but I don't have my new phone yet I won't be able to bet) and moving on Sunday.
First of the quaddies and Big 6's will be tomorrow night.
Cheers

The time has come....
Hey All,
I'm surprised it's been a month since I last posted, time sure does go quickly.
It's a special day for Australian racing fans, the horses birthday - the day they all get a year older. It's also the first day of the new racing season - the perfect point to draw a line in the sand and change approaches to ones that can work.
The other thing that comes into play is a personal one - I turn 40 a week from today. It's a pretty safe bet that around half my life is done and dusted and while there have been plenty of positives and I wouldn't be where I am without having travelled the journey I have, I do have one thing I really need to fix. That one thing is my punting and the flow on from that to my finances.
So from today and into the future a couple of new things come into play. My punting this year will be fully budgeted for, structured and recorded. I am determined to make money this season / year and set up a solid base to build off. The other is putting a personal budget into place - money allocated for different parts of my life, I want to have fun still - and will do - but it will be within my means for a change. These things should have been in place all along, but hey - they haven't been so it's about time that changes.
In terms of punting - my betting will have 6 parts
Part 1 - Betfair - Play / Lay / Dutch
Starting with a bank of $100 I'll risk 10% of my bank with each bet to try and build a bank of $1000. I realise that 10% of the bank is high BUT that will add pressure to limit my bets to more solid prospects.
The 3 bets types are
Play - either 10% to win or 5% each way (win and place) on the my selection
Lay - laying to risk 10% of my bank - with a maximum price of $5 or 4/1 in the old
Dutch - to a maximum of 2 runners - once again betting to risk 10% of my bank
Minimum return I will accept on a bet is $1.25 before commission - so I will be backing some short ones provided I believe they are value at the short odds.
Part 2 - The Exotics
Once again starting with $100 bank and aiming for $1000 I'll play the quaddies and Big 6's across the gallops, trots and greyhounds in Sydney and Melbourne. Initially my focus will be on the Friday night trots, Saturday gallops and Saturday night greyhounds.
Bets will be $6 quaddies and Big 6's on the trots and greyhounds and $12 on the gallops. I expect to have to top this bank up a few times before I hit a result but fingers crossed it isn't long before I crack something worthwhile.
Minimum percentage taken will be 10% on quaddies and 1% on Big 6's
Part 3 - Sports
Watch this space but I'm hoping to get together with a mate and run something around sports.
Part 4 - Casino
This one is down the track a little - I'll save a bank to take to the casino to hit the tables with
Part 5 - Poker
Once again, down the track a little but I'll fund a poker account or two and play some live poker to see how I go.
Part 6 - The Lotteries
Every so often I'll get a ticket in the lottery to try for a big jackpot - I wasn't originally going to record these but it makes sense to complete the picture.
There will be a few bets outside the system but these will be limited.
The first of these will be bets on my own horses - i.e. Soul Diva and Etolie Vitesse - both of who won their last starts - GO YOU GOOD THINGS!!!
The second is race days with mates which will contain a mix of official bets - fully recorded and accounted for - and shared bets with mates that will come out of my social budget rather than my betting one - i.e. out of my budget for the day out.
The third and last is nights out with mates that may involve a few dollars in the pokies, through the TAB or on the tables - once again out of my social budget
For me, this is all about taking control and seeing what happens. I'll post bets before hand where possible, where not possible I'll post results and updates on a frequent basis.
It's all a bit exciting and to be honest a little scary, but the time has come.....
All the best everyone
Another losing weekend but.....
Morning All,
The headline is a little wrong, my losses actually started on Thursday night and then continued on Saturday - same old same old. Sunday should've been a day out and about (and will be next week) but I decided to punt away instead for a small profit.
I did something different yesterday though, something I should've been doing all along - I kept records. Now I can sense people thinking "are you serious, you talk about becoming professional but don't keep records!!!" and you would be right. Whenever I have kept records in the past it felt like a distraction and I seemed to lose more but in hindsight it probably just showed what was actually happening - i.e. that I was losing. Note I kept more detailed records while I was working with ratings but that was a bit different.
So, after yesterday the decision has been made to keep records now and review my days betting to see where my edge is. One thing I do need to work out is what to do about races I don't bet on - do I keep a record to see if that choice was the right one or not - for now I'll leave them out but that might need to change.
I won't comment on what the records are revealing until I have a bigger sample but they did make interesting reading.
The World Cup is progressing well and after a few small losing bets up until now I bet a little more confidently last night with two collects on Germany and Argentina - everyone is playing to stay alive now and I think the form will stand up.
Aussie Rules was quiet this weekend, I had a loss with Geelong getting rolled - and the Swans lost to the Pies AGAIN - I didn't bet on that or any other games though. Rugby League, no bets yet but I will back the Raiders to beat the Bulldogs tonight.
After last nights little win on the soccer I've decided to roll onto the baseball today, don't really now much about it but on what I read before making my bets I feel a little confident - so it's Texas -1.5 and a total match score of over 8.5 - gives me something to cheer for while I'm at work :)
Poker - 2 * 3rds and a win last night from my last 4 starts in the Australian Online Poker League, so have found a little form - dropped a few Euro in tournaments outside that though but still in front :)
Well there's the update - I'll stay in touch a bit more frequently now I've got new approaches up and running.
Have a great day :)

A quiet old week
Hey All,
Just touching base, it's been a quiet week on the punt as I wait to reload the accounts again. Had a couple of little big 6's and quaddies yesterday but with no luck. Back into it later in the week
Raiders play the West Tigers today, unfortunately I won't be able to see it until midnightish being down here in Melbourne but I'm hopeful of a good result. Swans have the week off.
World Cup is driving me crazy, I guess the cream will rise to the top in the knock out stages though and it should become easier to find a winner or two. Aussies have been luckless but can still sneak into the next round if things go their way later in the week - fingers crossed
Have a great week everyone

New town, new approach - well almost
Hey All,
I'm back :)
I've found a temporary place to live in Melbourne until I can find something more permanent, just up the road from the MCG and walking distance to work in the city. I also got myself an elcheapo used laptop and a broadband modem so that I could get back online - it's amazing how big a part of your life it can become, as sad as that is to admit.
Now, the new approach - I know that to achieve my dreams I need to bet on less races and make bigger bets. So I started that last week with a winning day at the races and followed up with a couple of winning sessions on Betfair. Unfortunately, I fell into old habits and had a losing session at the casino, the pub tab after a few drinks on Friday night and last night on Betfair after was a good day and getting greedy / over confident. Overall, I'm down a couple of hundred since being here but don't feel too bad about it, I just need to drop a few bad habits and things will be okay.
The big reason that I'm okay about it is that even though I dropped the money mentioned above and my Betfair account is empty again, I actually made a couple of withdrawals in the last few days - something I haven't done for a while - and my profit and loss on there since starting up again is in the black :)
Betfair is where I plan on making my money, I just need to be patient and make it happen. Selecting the right races to play, avoiding the wrong ones and slowly building my bank is the key. I am confident I can do that this time, it won't be easy but I can and will do it.
Tips wise, I'll try and post something on Saturday mornings now that I'm back up and running - hopefully they'll go okay. My main horse, Soul Diva, is back tomorrow, well possibly - a fillies and mares race at Moonee Valley over an unsuitable 1200m. It's great to have her back for what will be her last preparation - fingers crossed for a win on the way out.
Pokerwise, I haven't found a game yet but will start looking harder this week or next - the time to see if I can actually play is getting closer.
Footywise - The Raiders dropped one against the Cowboys last night that they should've won, very frustrating. The Swannies had a good win against Port and are in the top 8 where they belong.
Finally, the World Cup has started up once again - the Aussies play the Germans early tomorrow, hopefully they can get at least a draw out of it. I'm looking forward to cheering them on - GO YOU GOOD THINGS!!!
That's it for now, updates will be more regular now - all the best

The move is almost here
Hey All,
Just a quick note to let you know things are still progressing - my last day at work in Canberra is Friday, my first in Melbourne is Wednesday and I move sometime in the middle :)
Just home from the pub after watching Queensland win Origin 1 and pretty well wrap up their 5th series in a row - GO YOU GOOD THINGS!!!
Apart from that, same old same old - I'll be back in touch once I've moved and the new system is ready to roll
All the best

Still here for now
Hey All,
Just touching base - hope everyone is well
Wiped out quickly with both my SCOOP entries, maybe next year
My move is only a couple of weeks away now so the Canberra wind down has started with a few events planned on the way out. Yesterday was a bit of fun with a trip to see the Swans vs Bulldogs, Raiders vs Storm and then to a club to watch the FA Cup Final - downside was all my teams losing but was still a great day out.
Interestingly the Raiders fans really gave it to the Storm in stages but particularly when they scored their final try off what was an obvious forward pass - the chants of "CHEATS" sung out loudly around the ground - I think that will only get worse as the season progresses. I am looking forward to what it's like at a Storm home game shortly after I get down to Melbourne.
Punt wise, still can't pick many winners but haven't been betting a lot - will be good to change things and crank them up when I arrive down south.
Anyways, just wanted to let you know I am still kicking
Take care

Easy come, easy go :(
Morning All,
Well that wasn't really worth it - took a gamble early on when I hit pocket aces, couple of raises preflop - flop was a mixed 6,9,J or similar so I pushed all in only to run into a set of 6's that held up. That's poker I guess, I probably over played it but figured it was worth a crack to try and double up early.
Not sure where I ended up finishing as late registration (I'm not a fan) was still going and the numbers were still building, the pop-up said 21167 though.
Looking at where to spend my $11 ticket and maybe a day off on Wednesday to play event 8 - NL holdem - is the go, has a much more reasonable starting time of 10am local time.
Anyways, such is life - back to bed for me.

Welcome to May
Morning All,
I have a feeling May will be a pretty big month. For starters, it's my last month here in Canberra - the move has come forward to the end of the month so from June I'll be living down south again. I am REALLY looking forward to a fresh start and the opportunity to turn things around, I will definitely be adopting some new approaches.
Still need to find a way to build a bankroll though - maybe SCOOP is the way. I have two tickets to use $11 and $22 - fingers crossed I can make something out of them. The $22 one gets a run at 3am tomorrow morning playing for a guaranteed prize pool of $250,000. I'd be happy with even a little of that. The early start is painful but if I manage to get on a roll at least I don't have to worry about being late for work until well into the tournament. Fingers crossed for a result.
Both my teams, the Raiders and the Swans had wins this week - gotta be happy with that, especially with the mighty Swannies sitting on top of the table with 5 wins and 1 loss. Big test next week against the Cats - BRING IT ON I say :)

ANZAC Day - Lest we forget
Morning All,
Very important day here in Australia today, the day we remember those that have fought for our freedom - we thank them with all our hearts, lest we forget.
Nice win by Jessicabeel in the Sydney Cup yesterday - shame I couldn't unload, she is pretty smart and even though it's a big step up to the Melbourne Spring carnival I predict she will be playing a part.
The other great result yesterday was Hot Danish finally cracking it for a Group 1 win in the All Aged stakes - she's a great mare who really deserved that honour, well done to all concerned.
Swannies had another good win :) - but in a round that looked straight forward with no favourite longer than $1.30 or so there's already been 2 upsets. There is money to be made betting on football, but it's not as easy as we might all think.
This old computer is definitely on it's last legs - another reformat last night :( I'm just hoping it keeps me going until the move - hopefully in a month or so, I'll work something out after that - it's probably time to get a laptop. Hopefully I'll get things rolling and be able to afford one before too long.
Have a great day All - GO THE RAIDERS!!!

It's all getting closer
Hey All,
Looks like my move might be coming forward to the start of June rather then the start of July - fingers crossed, the sooner the change happens the better. It's definitely time for a fresh start so BRING IT ON I say.
The other thing that's getting closer is SCOOP - it's almost time for the cards to be dealt. I won an $11 ticket back in January that is just waiting to be played, by doing the the blog thing I should be able to pick up a $22 ticket to go with it and there is a $109 ticket up for grabs as well, although my blog will way too boring to win that!!!
Either way - today is the day for phases 3 and 4
So click on these two links and off you go
vvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvv
Phase 3 is How to Play 8 Game Mix
I'd better watch that and learn myself, could come in handy :)
and Phase 4 is How to Play Badugi
I've played it once before - it's different but pretty entertaining - check it out.
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
Only 1 phase to go :)
My Pokerstars account was down to 1 cent this morning but luckily i had 15 FPP and risking 10 of those managed to place 57 out of 3491 players winning 80 cents :)
Doesn't sound like much but hey, it's a wet old day here in Canberra and that'll buy me into a few very low buy ins to help pass the time. PLUS tells me I'm not in too bad form leading into SCOOP :)
Sydney Cup Day today - I won't be having a bet but if I was Jessicabeel each way looks a cracking chance
Have a great day All - GO THE SWANNIES

Day 7 results - time for another spell
Hey All,
Another losing day to finish the first week. Overall everything is behind now and after having looked at the results the realisation has hit that I'm just not ready yet - I need more tweaking but more importantly more data. So it's time for another spell before whacking in next season once I'm living in Melbourne and have refocussed my punting.
I'll still post now and then, just not the ratings - well not yet, I don't have enough data and there are a couple of factors missing that I need to work out how to build in. I thought I would get away without adding them but having looked at this weeks results, and those from last year I know I can't. I'll get there before too long on though :)
Ok the results
Race 5
3 ELZEEZA $2.7
1 GIBRALTAR MOON $2.7
4 OFF THE PLANET $13.6 3rd $1.50

Day 5 - Sale, Here We Go!!!
Morning All,
My favourite day of the working fortnight, pay day :)
Kinda makes all the hours I spend there worthwhile, although I wouldn't mind at all if I could afford not to have to go. Budget is still VERY tight with lots of bills to pay but I'll drop a little into my accounts so I can start to back these from today. Fingers crossed the results roll on in

I was walking to work today thinking to myself - how did a 250ish % profit turn into a 25ish % profit when I didn't even totally wipe out - didn't take long to realise I'd stuffed up my results. They have now been updated, sorry about that.
Another backwards step today unfortunately but such is life on the punt I guess

Well there you go
Hey All,

Overall Q +$90 (225% POT) E +$207.60 (259% POT) T -$204 (100% LOT)
Quaddie -$625 (100% LOT)
So there it is - quinellas and exactas both kick butt, wipe outs everywhere else. I've put the trifectas and quaddie in for interest but based on last years trial the quinellas and exactas, and more specfically the exactas are the ones to play.
Another that I've thought up to be looked at is to lay the shortest priced runner that doesn't make my top 5 - here's the results for today
Race 6 - Lay Devil Rider $4.30 Unp
Race 7 - Lay Ajhar $4.20 Unp
Race 8 - Lay Jewel of Johar $7.60 Unp
Race 9 - Lay Thrillionaire $5.90 3rd
Prices are the lay price taken from the Betfair Advantage Tool - so 4 for 4 to start off :)
Day 1 done and dusted, definitely enough to make me want to come back tomorrow and see how things progress.
Until then, have fun All :)

I'm back - well sort of
Hey All,
It's been a pretty ordinary 6 months in terms of the punt - I lost the plot, I lost focus and most of all I lost money. So the time has come to turn things around again, do more work and get it right.
It's funny how little things come together and make things feel right - that's what's happened the last few days. First up I was chatting with a lady at work that I'd talked to about my ratings previously - she mentioned bringing them back. On the way out the door I bump into another guy from the IT area I worked in for a while, he asked how my racing was going. Friday night I get home from work and find I can get a free 60 day trial of Office 2007 - WAHOO - and early Saturday morning I dream I'm doing my ratings again. Yeah I know, probably just all coincidence but hey, maybe it's actually fate, a sign - do the work - get the results. We'll find out soon enough either way.
So yesterday, 10-4-10 (nice sense of balance in that date) I got started on trying to work out how Excel 2007 works and how I can use a database without the tools I lost when I had to reformat my computer. It took a bit of doing but I think I have it working again. I sure am glad I emailed myself (to an external account) copies of my spreadsheets and database so that I didn't have to start from scratch - I don't think I could've done that.
Anyways - I rated 4 races from Flemington for 2 on top winners, they were short but I had them shorter so even with the limited work I saw the results can come. From there, I thought about what to do and realised that I need to specialise and based on the very high probability that I'll be back in Melbourne from July, that's what I've decided to specialise on. So during the weeks I'll try and rate the quaddie legs (last 4 races on the card) from the feature Victorian meeting each day. Saturdays I'll rate most of the card - no jumps races though.
So today's venue - Wangaratta. Cranbourne would normally have qualified but there was less depth in the fields and the heavy track put me off. I won't always be able to post my selections on here but hey, you've come along for the ride this far and I don't actually have a bank to bet with :( so I might as well put the selections out there for someone to use if they want. So here they are, top 5 rated for each of the last 4 races this afternoon
Race 6
5 WANGANESE $2.2
7 DIXIE DOLL $7.9
2 BOTTLER RED $10.1
8 JOYBOY $12.5
4 SIVADIO $15.2

10 ST IVES (NZ) $2.2

Race 9
2 HOMELANDER $2.0
1 PROSPECT $6.5
7 READY TO PLEASE $18.2
13 SNAKEY PRINCESS $23.3
6 HILLBILLY DANCER $23.9
Strange that my favourites all came out around the same price, that will change as the data builds. Hopefully there are a few winners amongst that lot.
Payday Thursday, I can't afford to put much towards the punt but I will slide something over to get me started. Until then, it will be a case of watching the results and learning from them - a tweak here, a tweak there until the results hopefully start to flow :)
It's great to be back, well sort of
All the best
p.s. lucky I'm not betting on the footballs this week - upsets everywhere!!! Well done Swannies though, it's looking like being a good season :)

Poker anyone?
Hey All,
Currently enjoying a few weeks off work and still punting badly :(
I think it will be a case of just battling through until the end of the season before changing direction with a potential change of location in a few months time. All going to plan I'll be moving back to Melbourne at the end of June and will be able to specialise in what is usually the best racing in Australia.
My killer is still too many bets rather than picking and choosing targets - part of that because I don't have a bank, so whatever else I end up doing I will have to find a way to build a bank to use.
Maybe Pokerstars have the answer :)
They've finally sent me my second message to post, so here it is
vvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvv
Online Poker Tournament
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
The SCOOP games start in May and I'm looking forward to playing a few - HUGE money up for grabs - so a chance of a collect or three. I just need the times to work out ok - think you can do something there Pokerstars guys??? :)
They are also running a Dream Job promo, I will only get two chances to qualify for a final - tonight and tomorrow - so wish me luck. Overall prize is $5000pm and $40k in tourney entries over the course of 12 months - would be sensational to have a go at that :)
So there it is, not much happening on the punt for now but I'll keep you informed.
Cheers

So there it is, not much happening on the punt for now but I'll keep you informed.
Cheers

Still cold but bound to warm up soon
Hey All,
Still kicking - punt is still ordinary, just playing small amounts as I look for some form. I get a feeling it's getting closer - well hopefully :)
Footy seasons aren't far off either with lots of pre-season games going on - Swans finally won a NAB Cup game - WAHOO, looks like we have signed a few good young ones. I WILL make some money on the footy this season.
Now the main reason for posting today, Pokerstars have offered me a freebie tourney entry and I'd be a mad man to knock it back - just need to meet the qualifying rules so here goes - it says I have to use this next bit in a sentence - yeah right LOL - here it is Pokerstars guys
VVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVV
• â€Å“which is why playing poker is clearly a game of skillâ€
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
I agree though, poker is clearly a game of skill, with a touch of luck needed to really clean up. I can actually learn something from poker for when I punt - I need to fold more hands - i.e. have less bets. Just play the good hands.
Anyways, short and sweet today - will post more to qualify for this as well as hopefully tip a winner or 3
Take care

Cold cold cold
Hey All,
Just wanted to drop in a quick note to say I'm still kicking. Punt has been awful the last few months, I am colder than Europe and America put together!!!
I'm sure it'll turn around one day, it's just a question of when.
The last crack with the bot on Australia Day failed as well, so it's gone. I've just been plugging away losing little bits here and there as I try and find some form.
Anways, life goes on - the good horses are coming back and with a massive big 6 jackpot this coming weekend maybe that's the time to make my move, fingers crossed at any rate.
Poker wise - I only got to play one more of the World Blogger Championship games - finished 427th out of 1536. Now I just need to wait for SCOOP to start whenver that is. Was great to see a young Aussie guy win the Aussie Millions - maybe that can be next year :)
Take care everyone, back soon

Missed it by that much :(
Hey All,
Missed the next break by a minute or two - pocket pair was always going to be a killer so when I went all in with my 4's and saw he had 9's I knew straight away i was gone
Pretty happy though - 1740 starters and I finshed 68th picking up a $11 ticket in SCOOP :)
Couple of tips for today - Randwick Race 5 - 2 Zavite and Caulfield Race 5 - 1 Denman (will be short but should win)
Late for my bbq now though so gotta run
All the best
p.s. if you have a blog sign up for the next blogger championship :)

Update Number 3 :)
WAHOO - I'm still kicking although it was a close call there for a bit. Overplayed a couple of hands and fell back into the 100's and in danger of missing the "money". Pocket 10's came to the rescue though, turning into trips and allowing me to double up to 20,669 chips at the 3rd break.
Currently 71st of 161 - with 153 in the "money" - should make it from here :)
Average stack is 21,886 so I'm just under.
Probably won't make the next break but we'll see how I go :)
Cheers

Update number 2
Hey All,
Break number 2 and I'm still kicking :)
Pocket pairs are holding up well and I've taken out a couple more players now - 4's turned into a full house on the flop and 7's held up against A 9 or similar. It's nice having a big stack to rick against small ones on ify hands.
Current position 25 of 343 - avg stack 10145 my stack 21333 :)
Just need to have some patience and play smart and should get into the "money"
Will let you know how I go

Quick update
Hey All,
I'm still alive at the first break, looks like 9 is my lucky number today :)
Couple of bad calls early had me in trouble - but then I managed a few small wins before hitting 4 * 9's against A Q and getting all a guys chips. This was followed up by my 99 holding up against A 10 to take out another. Overplayed a hand to give half my stack back :(
All good though, after the break - pocket 2's hit trips on the flop and take out another who had A 2 and had hit two pair. Then pocket 7's stood up to take out another small stack. Cards are falling my way and I've just cracked 10000 chips and I'm in 40th place, out of 1017 avg stack 3532 - time to tighten up a bit with prizes to 153rd
Wish me luck :)

Happy Australia Day :)
Hey All,
Busy day coming up today, poker, punting and a BBQ
I didn't run the bot last night, instead I'll hold off and let it run on the races today - it's not a bad days racing + that's what my testing was on. Hopefully it'll do ok. Plus it works out well as I'll be at a BBQ with friends all afternoon so I can set it and hopefully come home to find it in profit :)
This morning is Poker, starts in 15 minutes or so - I'm playing to win a ticket into the SCOOP competition at Pokerstars. I'm not actually sure when that's on but I guess it's sometime in Autumn southern hemisphere time. Anyways, I get a chance to have a crack for free due to having this blog so I'm happy.
Will let you know how I'm going - wish me luck
Cheers

Another one bites the dust - well mostly
Hey All,
Don't you just hate it when you come up with a new system, do a little testing on paper (well in a spreadsheet) and the results look great - the excitement builds as you prepare to give it a go and then...
It flops :(
System was a very simple one - laying the 3rd favourite on Betfair. I've seen plenty of figures that tell me that of the top 5 favourites the 3rd one makes the biggest loss so I figured there is money to be made laying them - especially if you add a little loss recovery to the mix. Of course doing this is time consuming and a bit boring but seeing as bots don't get bored I figured that was the way to go. I downloaded a bot on a 5 day free trial and set it to work.
As a test I ran it on the UK greyhounds and after day, well night, one it had made a profit and everything was looking good - well until I realised I'd stuffed up the settings and rather than try and recover 100% of the loss over 5 bets, which I thought meant 20% of the loss at a time, it reocovered 100% of the loss 5 times!!! So I woke up to find the bot had made over $100 profit when I was hoping for a steady $30.
Either way, once more I thought I was on a winner - just had to rejig the bot and all would be fine. I took the afternoon off work, there wasn't much going on anyway as the systems were down, and ran the bot again but this time on the Aussie racing - worked a treat, the bank cracked $400 and I was away. This was all too easy, I was dreaming of retiring and all was good.
And then it happened, I ran the bot on the UK greyhounds again and woke up to find my max loss reached and half the bank gone :( - I was definitely too greedy there but my confidence was up. Anyways a run of losers had done major damage to my bank. I still had money left and figured it could turn around, my paper testing had been on Saturday gallops and that's what we were up to - the money would be rolling in again real soon - but no, a run of losers again and the bank was suddenly halved once more. Reset, start again with half the bank and once again - GONE. So so frustrating. You would hit a double figure run of results and then wipe it out with 3 out of 5 stuff ups.
So, the system has bitten the dust - well like I said mostly, I have the bot for another 24 hours or so, I'm hoping to crank it up one last time for small stakes and see if it can pay for itself. If not, then the system will be dead and buried.
Punting can be so painful at times
Poker on the otherhand, well actually - it can be ultra frustrating as well but still worth a crack. So this time tomorrow I'll be playing in the World Blogger Championships on Pokerstars. There are a week of lead ups to a main event on the 31st (1st of Feb our time) - unfortunately they are all on this time of day so I'll miss Wednesday, Thursday and Friday while I'm at work but hopefully I can make the most of the others and crack a prize or two. Got to love Australia Day and the taking an extra day off to make it a 4 day weekend :)
If you got a blog - why not have a crack.
Ok, better get going - got some things to do
Have a great day

I'm still kicking
Hey All,
Just a quick post to let yow know I'm still out here. I have a new system to trial from tomorrow but won't say too much for now, fingers crossed it works.
Thanks to Davo for telling me about the Poker Stars blogger championships - maybe I can win on the tables instead of at the races :)
Anyways, I'll see how I go and let you know

How not to punt - 2009 done and dusted
Hey All,
Firstly - Happy New Year :)
Secondly, I am a very ordinary punter at times and I proved that to myself the last couple of months and in particular the last few days. Two things kill me when I bet, I know it but still make the same mistakes. They are
1 - over confidence - I get on a roll like I did around August where I can't seem to do wrong, so I push it and then it falls in a heap. So much so that the last couple of months have been shocking. I bet too big stakes, I make bets I shouldn't make and I play way too many races (see below). Annoying thing is that as a punter if you have no confidence you will most likely either lose or not bet. So there's a balance somewhere in there that I'm struggling to find.
2 - too many bets - I've just spent the last couple of days cleaning out all my betting accounts betting race to race in the hope of getting back into the winning zone. Of course it didn't work, it never does - there are punters out there that successfully play every race, so it can be done BUT they spend hours rating them etc, without the work it's almost impossible to do - so I need to pick and choose, target my bets - that's the advantage we have over the bookies, they have to field on every race - we don't - I need to realise that.
So, I know what's wrong - question is can I fix it?
I think I can and will have a crack at doing so from next week when I can load a little more money in and start over. In some ways it'll be good to have a week off, clear my head and get a bit more organised. Sure it's frustrating but hey, you need to live with the consequences of your actions and my actions mean that I need to have a week off.
It's a little sad thinking where I was when I started this blog - I had a plan, a system and had done a hell of a lot of work. From there I drifted back into old habits and ended up in the same place I've always ended up. If anyone reads this they probably think I should give it all up and they would probably be right, I would be a hell of a lot better off financially if I'd never had a bet at all BUT it's in my blood, I know the game can be beat and I've seen people do it - I still want to be one of those people. I just have to work out how.
There's another challenge I have - this is going to sound stupid to some, possibly familar to others, but I'm so used to losing on the punt that mentally it's easier if I do. It's what I know, it's familar, it's what I've been doing for years and then somehow that becomes - I don't deserve to win, I need to punish myself for my choices by losing. My psychology 101 tells me it's a learned behaviour, and it is, I just need to "unlearn" it.
So that's what I need to change in 2010 - I need to snap out of the "losing is what I do" mentality and realise that it's ok to win. It's not going to be easy but 2010 is a big year for me, I turn 40 this year - I've been punting over half my life now and it's time to turn it all around, it's time to make it happen. It's time to break the losing habit.
By the way, the tipping thing didn't work out, I missed a few cut off dates and lost interest - might have another go one day, I'll leave the link below, there are some great tipsters on the site, check it out.
Overall from here re this blog, I probably won't be posting my bets like originally did - that's too structured, too organised and in some ways adds too much pressure. I'll post some thoughts now and then though, maybe a tip here and there and go with the flow.
So thanks for reading, keep checking in and I'll let you know how things are progressing - any advice would be welcome.
Cheers and have a wonderful 2010 :)
